AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that loan signing David Beckham will not be in the starting line-up in Sunday’s Serie A clash against AS Roma.

The England midfielder, who is due to return to LA Galaxy in March, is expected to make his Serie A debut after making his first appearance in a midweek friendly against Hamburg in Dubai.

The Rossoneri will start their league campaign after winter break with a trip to the Italian capital and they are expecting big things from Beckham as they attempt to close the gap with Serie A leaders Inter Milan.

And while Ancelotti has already stated Beckham will make his Serie A debut at the Stadio Olimpico, he has also announced that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star will have to start as a substitute.

Ancelotti told a press conference: “Beckham is ready to play even though he’s been inactive for two months.

“I think he is in physical form to play for an hour but that doesn’t mean that I would like to put him as a starter immediately against Roma.

“That would be a gamble.”
