David Villa found the net and was later sent off as Valencia were held to a 1-1 draw at Deportivo La Coruña.

The visitors had their first glimpse of goal after seven minutes when Villa released Joaquín, who glided into the box and rounded Daniel Aranzubia, but the former Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper stuck out his arm and cleanly swatted the ball away.

Valencia went ahead in the 25th minute when Villa picked up a loose ball in the area, turned a defender and slammed his shot past Aranzubia.

Depor should have drawn level a minute into injury time, but Julián de Guzmán could only stab his volley off-balance from three yards out straight at César.

But the Galicians were thrown a lifeline 13 minutes from time when Villa was dismissed for a second bookable offence after he charged in late on Aranzubia in an attempt to block a clearance.

And Depor quickly took advantage of their extra man as Adrián López equalised three minutes later, heading home a Sergio free-kick past a helpless César.

It was no more than the home side deserved and they almost won it with three minutes left, when an error by César let in Lassad Nouioui, but the young French forward could only send his shot into the side netting.

Winning three points that may be critical to Tottenham’s Premier League survival did not ease manager Harry Redknapp’s irritation at being required to play a second-leg Uefa Cup tie against Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday evening instead of focusing fully on Sunday’s Carling Cup final. Redknapp would hand the trophy to opponents Manchester United if it would guarantee dodging the drop, but after tasting cup success with Portsmouth last season part of him clearly craves more Wembley glory and his attack on the fixture list was delivered with feeling.

Inter Milan extended their advantage at the Serie A summit by securing a 2-1 win over city rivals AC Milan in the 270th Derby della Madonnina.

Milan had started the brighter during the crunch clash with Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato combining well to create numerous opportunities.

The better chances were falling to Inter, though, and Dejan Stanković missed a glorious opportunity to open the scoring on 18 minutes, delaying his shot too long while totally unmarked from six yards and Massimo Ambrosini came sliding in from behind.

Adriano broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, although the Brazilian appeared to use his arm to divert the ball past Christian Abbiati.

Stanković then doubled the advantage two minutes before the interval when he latched onto a Zlatan Ibrahimović through-ball and did not waste a second this time in placing his shot low into the bottom corner past Abbiati.

Inter had a great chance to kill the game 90 seconds after the restart when Adriano pounced on a Kakha Kaladze error, but he amazingly fired wide one-on-one with Abbiati.

Worryingly for Milan, David Beckham was forced off after 58 minutes with a slight thigh problem.

Pato gave Milan a glimmer of hope when he registered his fifth goal of 2009 with 19 minutes remaining.

Beckham’s replacement Filippo Inzaghi thought he had scored an equaliser in the 78th minute when he rifled into the roof of the net on 78 minutes, but he was adjudged to have strayed offside.

Minutes later, Milan were furious again when Cristian Chivu appeared to drag back Inzaghi as he tried to control a pass, but referee Roberto Rosetti let play continue with Pato still well placed to score. However, he shot straight at Júlio César.

Juventus failed to take full advantage of their two major Serie A title challengers facing each other after drawing 1-1 at home to Sampdoria.

The hosts struggled to find any continuity in their play, with Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedvěd well contained by the Blucerchiati defense.

Giampaolo Pazzini gave Sampdoria the lead after 10 minutes when the former Fiorentina striker beat the Juve offside trap and latched onto Antonio Cassano’s through-ball before firing a low past Gianluigi Buffon.

Del Piero fed Nedvěd five minutes before half-time, but the veteran midfielder was denied by the post.

Five minutes after the restart, the visitors almost extended their lead when Cassano’s cross was deflected by Juve defender Cristian Molinaro onto his own post with Buffon stranded.

After surviving that scare, the home side got back on level terms in the 62nd minute when Amauri headed his first goal of 2009 from a cross by substitute Sebastian Giovinco.

The woodwork came into play again two minutes later to keep out Del Piero’s free-kick from the left, but Juventus failed to create any further chances before the final whistle.
